40 Hz gamma: the hype, the evidence, and what it means for focus music
Gamma is the loudest claim in focus audio — "40 Hz rebuilds your brain" — and it rests on research that was never about focus at all. We ship a Gamma mode. We'd still rather you understood what it is before you believe anything about it.

What gamma actually is
Gamma refers to brain activity oscillating above roughly 30 Hz — conventionally 30–100 Hz, with 40 Hz treated as its centre of gravity. It's the fastest of the named EEG bands, sitting above beta (13–30 Hz), the band associated with ordinary alert attention.
In the research literature, gamma activity turns up alongside things like sensory binding — the stitching of colour, shape and motion into one perceived object — and in attention and working-memory tasks. That association is genuine and repeatedly observed. What it is not is a proven lever: nobody has shown that pushing more gamma into a healthy brain from the outside makes it think better. Correlation in a recording is not a dial you can turn.
Worth knowing, too: gamma-range EEG is technically awkward to measure. Muscle activity from the scalp, jaw and eyes contaminates exactly the frequencies gamma lives in, which is one reason careful researchers are more cautious about gamma claims than the internet is.
Where the 40 Hz hype came from
Almost every viral "40 Hz" claim traces back to one line of work: the GENUS research from Li-Huei Tsai's lab at MIT. The headline studies — Iaccarino and colleagues in Nature (2016), then Martorell and colleagues in Cell (2019) — exposed mouse models of Alzheimer's disease to 40 Hz flickering light and, in the later work, 40 Hz auditory stimulation. They reported entrained gamma activity and reduced amyloid pathology, with changes in the brain's immune cells.
That is remarkable science. It is also, precisely:
- Neurodegeneration research, not productivity research. The outcome measured was disease pathology in animals bred to develop it — not focus, output, or cognition in healthy adults.
- Mostly in mice. The same group and a clinical spin-out have moved into early human trials of the protocol. Those results are preliminary and are still about Alzheimer's, not about your afternoon.
- A clinical stimulus, not a playlist. The protocol is a device delivering precisely-timed 40 Hz flicker — typically an hour a day, every day, often with light and sound together. It has approximately nothing in common with a gamma track playing under your email.
So when a video says "40 Hz clears amyloid plaques," the honest translation is: in mice, under a clinical light-and-sound protocol, in a disease model. Anyone selling you gamma audio on the strength of that study — including anyone selling ours — is stretching it.
The part that is well established
There is one genuinely solid 40 Hz finding, and it's older and less glamorous than the MIT work. The human auditory system produces an unusually strong steady-state response at around 40 Hz: click trains or amplitude-modulated tones at that rate drive a clean, measurable, reproducible following response in the EEG. Galambos, Makeig and Talmachoff described it in PNAS back in 1981, and it's been a workhorse of auditory neuroscience and hearing diagnostics ever since.
What that establishes is real but narrow: your auditory system will reliably follow a 40 Hz rhythm. Entrainment, in the modest sense, happens. What it does not establish is that following that rhythm improves attention, memory, or output. The response is a measurement, not a benefit. Treat any page that jumps from "the brain follows 40 Hz" to "therefore you'll think faster" as having skipped the only step that mattered.
So is gamma focus audio worthless?
No — but its honest claim is smaller and more subjective than the marketing suggests. What gamma-rate audio reliably delivers is a fast, bright, high-energy acoustic texture. Many people find that a short gamma session feels like turning up the contrast on a task: sharper, more urgent, harder to drift out of. Others find it agitating, especially late in the day or on work that needs patience rather than intensity. Both are normal.

How to use gamma sanely
- Keep it short. Twenty to thirty minutes, not an eight-hour background. Gamma is a sprint texture; the point is contrast against your normal state.
- Give it a tightly-scoped task. One clear thing with an obvious finish line — a defined edit, a known bug, a problem set. Gamma is poor company for open-ended thinking.
- Notice arousal, not vibe. The question isn't whether the track sounds impressive. It's whether, fifteen minutes in, you're locked in or wired. If you're wired, drop to a beta-band session and treat gamma as an occasional tool.

- Judge it on your own two weeks. Individual variation in this whole field is large enough that averages are close to useless for one person. Your work either notices or it doesn't.
The honest bottom line
Gamma audio is a legitimate thing to enjoy and a bad thing to believe in. The entrainment response at 40 Hz is real; the leap from that response to cognitive enhancement is unproven; and the famous studies people cite for it were asking a completely different question in a completely different species. If a focus app tells you otherwise, that tells you something about the app.
