The three techniques
Binaural beats
Two steady tones, one per ear, differing by your target rate — 200 Hz left and 218 Hz right yields an 18 Hz beat. The pulse exists nowhere in the audio; your brainstem generates the perception by comparing the ears. Requires headphones absolutely — speakers mix the tones in the air and destroy the effect. The most-studied of the three, and the one with the most meta-analytic attention.
Isochronic tones
A single tone switched on and off at the target rate — sharp, discrete pulses separated by silence. The rhythm is physically in the signal, so it works on speakers and needs no stereo separation. The trade-off is prominence: crisp on-off pulsing is hard to ignore, which is fine for a 10-minute meditation and grating across a three-hour work session. Less studied than binaural beats.
Amplitude modulation
The loudness of the audio itself rises and falls at the target rate — a smooth swell rather than a hard switch. Because it's applied to music rather than to bare tones, it can be woven into something you'd actually choose to listen to, and the modulation depth can be tuned from barely perceptible to unmistakable. Works on speakers, though headphones still help through isolation.

Which should you use?
- Short meditation or relaxation sessions, headphones on: binaural beats are the classic choice and have the most research behind them.
- Speakers, or long sessions where you'll forget the audio is there: amplitude modulation, because it hides inside music you can tolerate for hours.
- You want to feel the pulse distinctly and don't mind it being prominent: isochronic tones.
