Beta waves and focus: why 18 Hz
Focus audio is full of frequency claims, most of them stated with more confidence than the evidence allows. Here's what beta-band activity actually is, and where honest design ends and marketing begins.

What brainwave bands actually are
Put electrodes on a scalp and you record the summed electrical activity of large populations of neurons. That signal oscillates, and researchers group the oscillations by frequency: delta (roughly 0.5–4 Hz, deep sleep), theta (4–8 Hz, drowsiness and some memory states), alpha (8–13 Hz, relaxed wakefulness — famously stronger with eyes closed), beta (13–30 Hz, alert engaged attention and active thinking), and gamma (above 30 Hz, still argued about).
Two things are worth stating plainly, because a lot of focus-audio copy quietly skips them. Your brain does not run in one band at a time — all of these are present simultaneously, in different amounts and different regions. And these bands are correlates of mental states, not switches that cause them. Beta activity accompanies focused attention; producing beta activity is not the same as producing focus.
Where 18 Hz comes from
18 Hz sits in the middle of the beta band. It's high enough to be clearly in the engaged-attention range, and low enough to avoid the upper beta region often associated with anxiety and over-arousal — which matters, because more is not better here. Very high-frequency stimulation can feel agitating rather than focusing, and an anxious brain is not a productive one.
The honest framing: 18 Hz is a well-reasoned engineering choice inside a range associated with the state you want, not a magic number. Anyone telling you a specific frequency is uniquely and scientifically optimal for concentration is overstating what the literature supports.
How audio interacts with it
The mechanism claimed is auditory entrainment: give the auditory system a steady rhythmic stimulus and neural activity partially synchronizes toward that rhythm. There's genuine evidence that rhythmic auditory stimulation influences measurable brain activity and produces small-to-moderate effects on attention and memory tasks, with meaningful variation between individuals.
What's not established is the strong version — that you can reliably dial a person into a target cognitive state by playing a specific frequency. Treat any product promising that as marketing. The defensible claim is narrower and still useful: an engineered acoustic environment with steady beta-range rhythmic structure helps many people start and stay in focused work.
What this means for how you use it

The honest summary
Beta-band activity is genuinely associated with the mental state you're trying to reach. Rhythmic audio in that range genuinely influences brain activity and modestly helps attention for many people.
